A service of Choral Evensong will be offered on Saturday, October 26th at 4:00pm. Choral Evensong is a form of worship centered on musical settings of prayers and Biblical texts which takes place at sunset. It has its roots in the practice of singing services or 'offices' throughout the day, which was practiced in the earliest days of the Christian Church, and which has continued throughout history in monastic communities. During the 16th century, when the Anglican Church came to be, these old Latin offices were adapted into English-language modernized forms of worship, one of which being evensong or evening prayer, and they were codified in the new Book of Common Prayer, which still guides worship in the Episcopal Church today in an updated form. The liturgy invites those present to come to a place of rest and meditation as the sun sets and the busy world is hushed. The singing of responses, prayers, psalms, hymns, and canticles carries us beyond the limitations of human words towards those things we cannot articulate, giving thanks to God for the day past, and asking for protection through the night to come. Evensong continues to be offered daily in many churches and cathedrals throughout the English-speaking world, and its popularity has only grown in recent years, likely due to its ability to appeal to both people who may be new to the Episcopal tradition of worship as well as though who are well-acquainted with the tradition. We hope that you find the music an inspiration and an oasis of calm in a busy and troubled world.
