GET INVOLVED
Welcome!
Dear Friends,
This
page is designed to let you know about some of the ways you
can participate in the life of our community. We have included
contact names and telephone numbers to make it easy for you to
speak to someone about your interest(s). Please know that we
welcome your questions, suggestions, and most of all your offer
to help.
Christ Church is a strong and vital community because many people
are generous with their time and talents. We would love to have
you join us.
It
is, of course, by way of giving that you will receive. You
will receive the satisfaction that you are making
a difference
in the
world and making someone’s life better. You will receive
the pleasure of being part of a community that has a purpose – to
do what it can to bring about God’s Kingdom right here
and now. You will make friends. You will have fun. Your life
will be
sweeter.
Take
a look at the carvings on the communion rail and all around
the altar area. You’ll see beautiful vines,
leaves, and grapes. This is a great image of our community. Jesus
is the vine; we are
the branches who bear much fruit and in this way give glory to
God. We bear sweet fruit by the way we live our lives, giving
freely of ourselves.
May these pages serve you well,
The Rev. Winifred N. Collin

The 8:00 a.m. acolytes are generally adults and serve individually.
The 10:00 a.m. acolytes serve in teams of 3 to 5 acolytes per
service. Occasionally acolytes are needed to serve at other weekday
services,
such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday and other services as
scheduled.
Usually training for new acolytes takes place in early fall each
year, however we welcome anyone interested in becoming an acolyte
at any time. Acolytes serve on a rotating basis every 5-6 weeks.

The Altar Guild prepares the sanctuary for many different services.
They set up for Sunday services of Holy Eucharist, Baptisms,
Confirmation, weddings, funerals, memorial services, Evensong
and other services
as scheduled.
Members are scheduled for 2 months per calendar year, and help
on Saturdays and Sundays during those 2 months.
On Saturdays the Altar Guild meets at 9:00 a.m. to fill oil
candles, renew wax candles, polish the brass and silver, and
wash and
press linens.
On Sundays, the Altar Guild volunteers set up and take down
the altar for each service. After the 10:00 a.m. service, the
altar
flowers are divided into smaller bouquets and delivered by the
Flower Delivery volunteers to designated parishioners, who may
be homebound or celebrating a special occasion.

Funeral Support Group
The Funeral Support Group assists clergy and families during
funeral and memorial services, and prepares the physical space
for the
service. The number assisting will depend on the size of the
service anticipated, and usually will consist of 2-4 volunteers
at a time.
Responsibilities include communicating with the funeral director,
preparing the sanctuary lighting, putting out parking signs for
family and handicapped persons, ushering, and seating the family.
There are usually about 7-10 funerals per year, and the time

a.m. or 10:00 a.m. Sunday services. Readers are scheduled
every 4-6
weeks and read the Old Testament, New Testament, or Prayers of
the People, with three lay readers scheduled per service.
Schedules are prepared 3 months in advance, with lessons
being mailed to readers the week prior to the Sunday they are

Music and Choirs
Music is an integral part of worship at Christ Church. Christ
Church Choirs are present each week, and guest musicians are
often present
at services as well.
Children’s Choirs: Basic music skills and singing are taught
to the members of the children’s choirs. There are two choirs
for kids, the Alleluia Choir (Kindergarten through 2nd grade) and
the Boys and Girls Choir (3rd grade through high school). These
choirs practice after church on Sundays, and sing regularly during
the 10:00 a.m. service, at Christmas Eve and Holy Week and other
services as scheduled. Kids starting 4th grade are eligible to
attend Camp Cory Choir Camp in late August.
Adult Choir: Open to all adults, this group meets on Wednesday
evenings from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. and rehearses from September
through May. Short voice lessons and skill building workshops are
held prior to rehearsals, at 7:00 p.m. Smaller, select choirs are
often scheduled to sing during the summer months.
Choir membership is open to anyone who wants to learn to
sing better; no experience or special talent is required! All
choirs
have fun
while making music and worshiping together.

We welcome you attend Sunday services of Holy Eucharist at
8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., with Sunday School and Nursery Care
available
during the 10:00 a.m. service.
On the first Sunday of each month a Family Service is held
at 9:15 a.m. and is about _ hour in length. It is geared toward
young children,
the Alleluia Choir sings, and the children are encouraged to
bring a non-perishable food item for their offering, to benefit
the Pittsford
Food Cupboard.
On Sundays at 5 pm, we offer a variety of services including
special music for evenings, quieter prayers and hymns, and silence
for
meditation.

Ushers
The job of the Usher is to provide members and guests with
a comfortable, welcoming experience before, during and after
worship
services.
After preparing the church for upcoming services, Ushers welcome
all, assist with seating, offer service bulletins, provide for
any special needs (hearing loop devices, handicap accessibility
etc.), offer care in case of emergencies (all are trained in
CPR and defibrillator use), and manage the flow of the service
during
communion and other parts of the service.
The Ushers are usually the first to greet all who come to worship,
therefore making this ministry one of hospitality. Usher teams
rotate every four weeks, and both men and women are encouraged
to become ushers.

Wedding Coordinators
The wedding coordinators assist both clergy and the wedding
party prior to and following the wedding ceremony.

prior to, and during the wedding ceremony, go smoothly. Working
in pairs of two, the coordinators take care of the needs of the
bridal party and any last minute needs prior to ceremony are invaluable;
the coordinator provides a service not offered by all churches,
and is much appreciated by the families.
Some of the duties include:
- Confirming that the Best Man has the rings
- Sewing on buttons or repairing seams
- Assisting with flowers for groomsmen, mothers, grandmothers
and readers
- Advising when mothers are to be seated
- Line up the wedding party
- Assist the bride with her dress
- Set up communion for services that follow the wedding
- Training is provided and the time commitment is approximately
2 hours per wedding.

Worship at Senior Residences
Christ Church offers monthly services at Valley Manor, The
Highlands and Cloverwood, which are senior residence communities. These services provide a
way to include our senior parishioners in regular worship, as
well
as worship with residents of many denominations.
Any interested members are encouraged
to participate and assist with these services, held on the
1st, 2nd, and 4th Thursdays
of the month.

EDUCATION
Adult Education
Christ Church offers a variety of educational opportunities
throughout the year for adults. All adults are cordially invited
to attend
these programs. Click here for upcoming offerings.
Clergy-led Programs:
Inquirer’s Classes are held twice a year and are designed
to introduce newcomers to the Episcopal Church and to the parish.
The clergy are invited to speak to the women’s guilds on
Biblical and theological topics.
Clergy meets with couples wishing to be married in the church,
parents of children to be baptized, and adults who wish to be
confirmed, baptized, or received and parishioners who have questions
about
their faith.
Professor-led Programs
Professors from the area, who have expertise in various topics,
are invited to present programs that are timely during certain
times of the year. Each program is usually on a weeknight, and
lasts for 3-4 weeks.
Parishioner-led Programs
Our “Parishioners at the Podium” series offers forums
on a variety of topics that parishioners have special knowledge
in. Past forums have included topics such as the Islam religion,
news coverage of special events, the American Red Cross, and local
bio-terrorism research. Other parishioners have offered art history
programs and play readings. We invite parishioners to come forward
with suggestions for future topics and offers to lead them.

Confirmation
Confirmation is the sacramental rite in which members of the
congregation make the adult decision to affirm their Baptismal
vows.
Confirmation is held once a year, on the Sunday that coincides
with the Bishop’s annual visit. Confirmation is open to all
baptized members in 9th grade or above. For youth desiring to be
confirmed, attendance at Sunday Teen Talk classes on Sunday mornings
is required. Special projects and assignments are also given to
augment their learning. Adults wishing to be confirmed or received
need to contact the Rector.
Teen members who wish to be confirmed choose a mentor to
meet with on a regular basis. Some teens have particular adults
in
mind,
while others will need help in choosing a mentor. Anyone interested
in becoming a mentor are asked to contact the Rector.

Library
The Christ Church Memorial Library was made possible by memorial
donations. Books and equipment used in the Library are kept current
by donations made by parishioners.
Books on a variety of subjects are available to be checked
out, and kept for no longer than 3 weeks. It is essential that
Library
materials be returned in a timely manner so that all may benefit
from them. Some opportunities for Library involvement include:
- Reading reviews and alerting the committee to potentially
new book choices
- Processing book purchases and inputting data on the computer
- Keeping the Library dusted and books properly shelved
- Periodically sorting books that are outdated

for.
The church employs two nursery caregivers during the school
year, but also encourages parents to assist from time to
time.

Sunday School
Our Sunday School program is designed to give children a
firm foundation in the Christian faith.
The formal Christian curriculum includes lessons for children
2 years old through high school, and encompasses both Old and
New
Testament lessons. Age appropriate materials are used, including
discussion and lesson reinforcement tools, including the Godly
Play curriculum for ages 2 & 3 and 4 & 5 (two different
classes).
Every class is encouraged to have fun. Crafts, stories,
and role-playing are used to reinforce the lessons. Along
with Bible lessons,
each class learns about the Episcopal Church rites and rituals,
such
as the parts of the worship services, the Lord’s Prayer,
the 23rd Psalm, and the Nicene Creed. The formal Sunday School
program follows the regular school year, and is followed by a Summer
Workshop in July and August.
There are over 120 children enrolled each year, supported
by a staff of 30 adult teacher-volunteers. New teachers are
always
needed.
Team teaching makes the job even more enjoyable and allows for
flexibility for all teachers. Experience is not necessary, just
a desire to be active and listen to the children while teaching
the Bible lessons.

Best Breakfast in Town
The Christ Church Youth Group sponsors a parish breakfast
once a month between the two worship services, usually
the 2nd or
3rd Sunday of the month. This extremely popular event includes
a menu
planned by parishioner Johanna Heise, the members of the Youth
Group and their leaders.
Each month you can expect homemade strata, fresh breads,
fruit salad, and Belgian waffles. There is a theme to each
breakfast
and additional food choices are served to emphasize the theme,
usually from a specific country. The breakfast is announced in
the Sunday bulletin and monthly newsletter so you will know what
to expect.
The Youth Group prepares the food on the Saturday afternoon
before the Sunday breakfast, and volunteers are needed to
plan and prepare
the special items with the Youth Group. If you enjoy cooking
and creative ideas to share, please contact one of the members

Just for Fun
Several times a year fun-filled outings are held for parishioners
and friends "just for fun."
The Annual Christ Church Golf Outing is one such event
that has become a much anticipated and greatly attended function.
The
past couple of years the event has been held at Shadow Lake Golf
Course,
followed by a dinner for golfers and non-golfers alike. It included
a raffle that provided contributions for many items donated by
community businesses. This year proceeds went to purchase a “wish
list” of items to benefit the Sunday School program.
Other events have included a Fall foliage bus tour, and
a tour of 5 wineries.
On Wednesday mornings during the cold winter months, the
Fellowship Room warms up when the Bridge Group assembles
for fun, food and
cards.
Ideas for future events are always welcome and volunteers
to head them up are more than welcome!

Men’s Fellowship Group
A group eager to expand is the Men’s Fellowship Group.
If you are interested in making this an active group with regular
meetings, we welcome you!
The Men’s Fellowship Group hosts two separate events each
year. The first falls on Shrove Tuesday (The eve of Lent – the
Tuesday before Ash Wednesday) with the ever popular Pancake Supper.
The church Dining Room is the site for this well-attended event,
and volunteers help to set-up, serve and clean-up.
The weekend before Memorial Day Weekend, the Men’s Fellowship
Group holds the Annual Plant Sale, to supply home gardeners with
flower and vegetable plants for their spring planting.
Many volunteer hands make these two events very successful.
Funds raised by these events provide for the maintenance
agreement
and monitoring system for the church fire alarm system, which
protects
the church and parish hall.
Finally, this group markets a selection of quality silk
Episcopal Church ties, which are available year-round, by
calling the church
office – 586-1226.

Special Events
Several special events have taken place in the past few years.
There were two architectural church tours. One included visits

Mumford and Scottsville. A group also went to The Dialogues of
the Carmelites, and couple of years ago there was a trip to Toronto
to see a play.

Safety Committee
The Safety Committee investigates ways
to make Christ Church safe for anyone who enters its doors.
The objectives of this group are:
- The personal safety of the church staff during office
hours
Fire safety
- Protection against theft of church property
- Appropriate Care of parishioners in the event of a
medical emergency during church services or while they
on the premises
- Accident prevention, especially in the Sunday School
classrooms and kitchen
- The Safety Committee recently facilitated the purchase
of a defibrillator and the training to use it. The defibrillator
was given as a gift
by one of the
Christ Church families.
- The committee seeks advice from parishioners who may
have expertise in certain areas involving safety. New
members are welcomed at
any time.

Weed and Water Gang
The Weed and Water Gang maintains all of the gardens at
Christ Church, including the side and front yards and the
Memorial Garden.
Active
participation is
needed during spring planting, summer watering and weeding, and
fall clean-up.
During the summer a weekly schedule of volunteers insures
that the grounds are kept up. The committee meets a couple
of times
a year.
The time commitment
is weather dependant, and volunteers bring their own tools when
scheduled.
If you get enjoyment from gardening, this group is for you!

ADMINISTRATION
Communications
The Communications Committee is refining and expanding
the ways we communicate with our current and future members.
The most imperative project is the development of our
website. The committee is also working to devise advertising
strategies
for
sharing what we
do at Christ Church. Communications is a new area for Christ
Church, but in
this
new age of computers and electronic information, it is a vital
area that needs to be developed. Anyone who has expertise in
this area
is encouraged
to join
this small committee to help Christ Church grow.

The Finance Committee advises the Vestry on parish financial
matters (including monthly financial reports, insurance, and
investments).
The committee’s
main function is to support the Treasurer and Vestry in monitoring parish
finances and in assisting with ad hoc finance-related projects. Anyone,
especially those
who have a background in accounting or banking experience, are invited
to join. Meetings are the Friday before Vestry meetings, at 7:30 a.m.

Office Helpers
Parishioners are a valuable resource for office support.
There are a variety of jobs that volunteers are called
upon to help
with:
- Answering the telephones on busy days
- Assembling large quantity projects, such as the monthly
newsletter, Christmas and Easter bulletins and
other bulk mailings
- Filling in when the secretary goes on vacation or
is absent
- The volunteer time varies according to current projects.

Planned Giving
Christ Church has actively begun a Planned Giving Program
to ensure the future life of Christ Church. To highlight
this
program and
honor those
who commit
to remembering Christ Church in their wills, the Psalm
100 Society has been established for those who have
already made
provisions
for Christ
Church
in their wills, as founders of the society.
Any parishioner interested in remembering Christ Church in their will or estate plans is encouraged to contact Craig Wilson or Winifred Collin.

Stewardship Committee
The Stewardship Committee acts as a steering committee
to plan and execute the annual giving campaign at Christ
Church.
In the past two years, it has recruited volunteers
to be visitors in the Every Member Visit campaign, as
well
as
work out details
of the
campaign, including follow-up following the campaign.
The committee meets throughout the year to kick off
the campaign, work during the campaign and begin
planning strategies for
the upcoming year. Volunteers
are always welcome to join.

Vestry
The Christ Church Vestry is the governing body of
the church. Elections are held once a year in January
to
elect a Junior
Warden, who will
serve for
two years, and three new Vestry members, who will
serve for 3-year terms. The Vestry
nominees are nominated by a committee of 3 (middle)
Vestry members, the two Wardens and the Rector,
and an at-large
member of the
parish.
The Vestry meets the second Tuesday of the month,
at 5:30 p.m. Meetings last about 3 hours, and
a light supper is
served.
